In these days of increasing fragmentation and hyper-specialisation in academia, Compass aims to foster connections amongst scholars. To further this cause, Wiley-Blackwell and the Compass Editors-in-Chief organised this online conference to promote interdisciplinary approaches.
The first Compass conference aimed to cut across academic boundaries - within and between disciplines, between theory and practice, approaches and methodologies by providing a space for multi- and cross-disciplinary review.
This groundbreaking conference offered:
Keynote speakers included:
- PROFESSOR ROGER GRIFFIN - Oxford Brookes University (History/Politics/Religion)
- PROFESSOR DAVID CRYSTAL - University of Wales, Bangor (Language/Linguistics)
- DR ROY BAUMEISTER - Florida State University (Social Psychology)
- PROFESSOR PETER LUDLOW - Northwestern University (Philosophy)
- DR EILEEN JOY - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Literature)
- PROFESSOR MARK MACKLIN - University of Wales, Aberystwyth (Physical Geography)
Conference Papers addressed the sub-themes of:
- Paradigms
- Borders
- The Environment/Energy
- Communication
- Justice/Human Rights
While the sub-themes reflect important intersections between these subjects, the overall theme of Breaking Down Barriers expresses the cross-period, cross-discipline remit of the Compass project. This conference represents our largest undertaking to date in the service of interdisciplinary collaboration.
The conference took place entirely virtual online 19-30 October 2009. Participants were able to attend at any time during the conference, when it suited their schedule, to download keynote addresses, read and comment on papers, and take part in other activities.
Papers were posted online along with commentaries for discussion and comment. Accepted papers will be published in special issues of the Compass journals.
Publishing Workshops were held on the following topics:
All Publishing Workshops were available as a podcast and delegates were able to discuss issues raised with the speakers.
The online Book Exhibit offered a 20% discount on selected Wiley-Blackwell books and the chance to receive complimentary copies of select journals.
Our Second Life Cocktail Bar hosted Meet the Speaker sessions at scheduled times, enabling delegates to interact with presenters and each other.
Musical Entertainment was provided in the form of a Battle of Academic Bands, with conference attendees able to listen to and vote for their favourite academic band or musician in the line-up.
