Paul Turnbull

Short Biography

Paul Turnbull gained his Ph.D. from James Cook University in 1986. He is currently a Professor of History and Head of the School of Arts, Media and Culture at Griffith University, Brisbane. He has written extensively on eighteenth-century historiography, colonial racial science, and the theft of Indigenous Australian bodily remains and cultural property. His recent publications include the co-edited volume, The Dead and their Possessions: Repatriation in Principle, Policy and Practice (Routledge 2004). He is also the creator of South Seas, a major online resource on James Cook's first Pacific voyage (1769–71), developed in collaboration with the National Library of Australia at http://southseas.nla.gov.au.
