Elizabeth van Heyningen
Short Biography
Elizabeth van Heyningen is a South African historian, who has worked for many years in social history, urban history and the social history of medicine. She has contributed articles to Medical History, Journal of Southern African Studies, South African Historical Journal, Historia and Kleio, amongst others. She has co-authored two volumes on the history of Cape Town, Cape Town. The Making of a City (1998) and Cape Town in the Twentieth Century (1999), as well as a volume on the Cape medical profession, The Cape Doctor in the Nineteenth Century (2004). Together with Dr Iain Smith she has been the recipient of a grant from the Wellcome Trust on a medical history of the concentration camps of the South African War and is currently writing a book on the subject. She taught for many years at the University of Cape Town and is now an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Historical Studies in that university.
