Annika Bautz
Short Biography
Annika Bautz's research centres on the areas of Romanticism, Victorianism, book history, reading and reception studies, and cultural history. Her book on The Reception of Jane Austen and Walter Scott: A Comparative Longitudinal Study (Continuum, 2007) compares the changing critical and public responses to the novels of these two authors from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day, drawing on a wide range of empirical evidence to assess reactions of readers belonging to diverse interpretative communities. Her current research focuses on the factors governing the publication and reading of novels in Victorian times, while other publications study the reception of British authors in Germany. She read English at the University of Hamburg, took her doctorate from the University of Newcastle, and is currently teaching at Keele University.
