Robert D. Rupert
Short Biography
Robert Rupert is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His research addresses issues in philosophy of mind, the philosophical foundations of cognitive science, and in related areas of metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. His publications include ‘Functionalism, Mental Causation, and the Problem of Metaphysically Necessary Effects’, Noûs (2006); ‘Challenges to the Hypothesis of Extended Cognition’, Journal of Philosophy (2004); and ‘Coining Terms in the Language of Thought’, Journal of Philosophy (2001). His forthcoming papers include ‘Ceteris Paribus Laws, Component Forces, and the Nature of Special-Science Properties’, Noûs; and ‘The Causal Theory of Properties and the Causal Theory of Reference, or How to Name Properties and Why It Matters’, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research. He earned his B.A. at the University of Washington, Seattle, and his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Rob has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers as well as an NEH summer research stipend.
