Nobutaka Inoue

Short Biography

Nobutaka Inoue's research is located in the field of sociology of religion, especially religious culture education and comparative studies of modern new religious movements. He has authored or co-authored Shinto: A Short History (RoutledgeCurzon, 2003), Contemporary Japanese Religion (Foreign Press Center/Japan, 2000), Globalization and Indigenous Culture (Kokugakuin University, 1997), Gendai Shukyo Jiten [Dictionary of Modern Religion] (Kobundo, 2005), Shinto Nyumon [Introduction to Shinto] (Heibonsha, 2006), Wakamono to Gendai Shukyo [Youth and Modern Religion] (Chikuma Shobo, 1999), Shinshukyo no Kaidoku [the Interpretation of New Religions] (Chikuma Shobo, 1992), Shukyo to Kyoiku [Religion and Education] (Kobundo, 1997) and numerous other books. Current research involves survey research on religious culture education, research on globalization and religion, and religious responses to information age. Before coming to Kokugakuin University, Tokyo, where he presently teaches, Inoue was Junior Lecturer at the University of Tokyo. He holds a BA in Religious Studies from Tokyo University and a PhD in Religious Studies from Kokugakuin University.
