The Holocaust: Remembrances, Reflections, Revisions

By Stephen J. Whitfield, Brandeis University (October 2006)

Section: Judaism

Subjects: Judaism, Religion.

Key Topic: holocaust.

Abstract

The moral abyss that about four decades ago came to be called the Holocaust has generated a vast literature seeking to probe the meaning of that catastrophe. A forthcoming volume to which eminent scholars have contributed from such fields as philosophy, history, and literary studies offers an opportunity to consider the current status of reflections on the Holocaust. Based in England and Israel as well as the United States, these particular academics demonstrate how inescapable their topic remains, how elusive is the struggle to decipher what may resist any satisfying explanation – or representation.
